SEO vs AEO: what changed when AI started answering
For twenty years the goal of search was simple: rank high enough that someone clicks your link. That is still worth doing, but it is no longer the whole game.
Increasingly, people get an answer instead of a list — from Google’s own summaries, from a voice assistant, or from an AI tool they asked directly. In each case, something has to decide which business gets named.
What AEO actually involves
Answer Engine Optimization is less exotic than it sounds. It means structuring content so a machine can extract a clean answer from it:
- Answer the question directly, early, in plain language, instead of building up to it over five paragraphs.
- Use headings that state what the section covers, so a machine can find the part that answers the question.
- Keep useful FAQs visible where they help readers. Use structured data only when it accurately describes visible content; it is not a special route into AI answers.
- Be specific and factual. Vague marketing copy gives a machine nothing to quote.
Why this matters more for small businesses
Search results depend on many factors, and a smaller business cannot assume that a local question will be easier to win. It can still make its own service, location and customer information clear, useful and accurate instead of trying to imitate a national brand’s broad content.
What not to do
AEO is not a reason to publish thin articles at volume. Answer engines are built to identify genuinely useful content, and filler is the thing they are designed to filter out.
The practical version
Keep doing SEO. Make sure each important page answers its main question clearly, uses honest headings and includes visible FAQs when they help readers. Neither SEO nor AEO guarantees citations.

What a small business can control
You cannot control whether a search engine displays a summary or whether an AI assistant selects your page. You can control whether the underlying information is accurate, useful and easy to navigate. Keep service pages specific, state who the service is for, explain relevant limits, and make contact details easy to find. If a business serves particular counties or towns, describe the real service area rather than repeating place names without context.
Structure answers for people first
Put the direct answer near the question, then add the reasoning and any qualifications readers need. Use headings that describe the section, short lists when steps are involved, and examples only when they are real and clearly identified. Keep frequently asked questions visible on the page; structured data should match that visible content and should not be treated as a shortcut to a rich result.
Measure what helps the business
Search impressions and clicks can show whether pages are being discovered, but they are not the business outcome by themselves. Review which queries lead to relevant visits, enquiries and customers. Improve a page when readers cannot understand the offer, when the information is out of date, or when analytics show a useful question is unanswered. Avoid publishing multiple thin articles just to target every variation of a keyword.

Search visibility is only useful when a page helps visitors act. Read this website enquiry checklist if visits are not turning into enquiries.
Frequently asked questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. A page still needs useful, accessible content and a sound technical foundation, but citations are never guaranteed.
Can a small business realistically compete in AI search?
A small business can publish accurate, specific information, but no one can guarantee inclusion in AI-generated answers. Focus on helping customers and making the source information trustworthy.
